Saturday’s Shenanigans

Prior to catching the subway, we paid a visit to the sushi shop around the corner and got our ‘entrée’ for the night. We sipped on little bowls of miso to warm ourselves as we eyed the conveyor. They had duck and bacon on the menu this time round, a plus to being the early birds and still at 1,000 won a plate.

Back to Hong-Dae we went, roaming the streets and watching the different performers. There were cute, happy soju bottles pushing through the crowds and dancing to the music. People were rugged up and snuggling into each other to keep warm under the bright moon.

We ducked down some side alleys and Bobby excitedly pointed out a sign that said, “Chan come in you won’t be disappointed and you will feel so very happy”. You might read that differently as ‘Fish & Chips’, but hey, each to their own.

This lively little drinking house was on the second floor, up a flight of splintered wood stairs with a heavy glass door; be careful with that one, I watched it swing closed onto a guy, pushing him forward into his mate. There are two seater tables along the wall opposite the bar and a couple of group tables at the back. We took the last empty two seater and ordered the fish & chips and the Bivo beer. The beer -4,500 won- was creamy and my hound dog nose had detected the sweet perfume of grape juice. I begged Bobby to ask the waitress if it had grape juice. When she confirmed they did indeed add it, I clapped like a seal and frightened her away. The grape took away the bitter taste and gave it just a hint of sweetness. As a non beer drinker, it was delicious. If on the other hand you’re a beer drinker, you might wonder why anyone would ruin a perfectly good drink.

The fish and chips came out with two sauces and a baby lemon wedge. For 10,000 won three pieces seemed decent. The red sauce tasted like the chicken cup glaze and the white one was similar to NZ’s can of cream and french onion packet combo. If you’re a kiwi missing home, that sauce might appease your troubles. I’ve had fish and chips one other time in Korea, in Incheon. This Bivo bar was miles better as the batter wasn’t an inch wide and the fish was actual fish. Beer and junk food mat-jib found.

Next on the itinerary was this three-story lit up wooden creation on the corner near the Eat Your Kimchi studio. Holy moly fan girl moment. Simon and Martina are my only source of Korean goodness when I’m back in Australia. The Korean restaurants back home can only do so much. Who else is a fan of EYK? Check out there blog http://www.eatyourkimchi.com/ and YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/simonandmartina and become addicted!

Anyways we ended up on the third floor sipping on sake and eating chicken skewers with some good friends from Wonju. Also on the menu if you’re looking for something exotic: chicken hearts, chicken skin and chicken gristle.

We made it until the wee hours and went our separate ways. Bobby and I had our last drunken bite at Monster Pizza beneath EYKstudio. The line was out the door for this place and it was cheap. 3,500 won got a large slice of hot cheesy goodness. It’s better than some of the pizzas I had in Italy, and the best so far in Korea. Pizza mat-jib found (I swear we eat healthy food too).

The night ended at Coffine Gurunaru where sleep took us for a few hours while waiting for the subway to open. I woke at 8 and took this picture of Bobby still sleeping and fell in love with Korea all over again; our belongings that were splayed across the table had remained.

Happy eating – Chan and Bob
